Term 2 Week 9 behind us...

Only one more week of Term 2!
Great to see the sun again and enjoy the fresh air!

The Ext(reme) writers are working towards the final drafts of their Slam Poems - it has been an interesting challenge to rework a piece based on the way it sounds when read aloud.  We have a few Prince EAs in the making...

'Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?'

Prince EA

In Manawanui, Science Fair and Mathletes, it was great to reconnect with each other and review the last 3 weeks' learning while Mrs Dunn was on leave.  Mathletes from Teams 3, 4 & 5 are nearing the end of their Geometry learning with discovery of trigonometry to problem-solve,  Team 2 are completing their final assessment of new Number learning, and Team 1, the same with Statistics.

Tournament of Minds students were introduced to planners for next term when they 'go it alone'.  Each team set up Trello, an online project management tool, and a overview plan for the 6 weeks of tournament preparation.  There will be a parent meeting in Week 1 next term to pass on more detailed information to whanau.

Ext(reme) Reading students are showcasing their talents as they dig deep into the written words of talented authors.  Mrs Stanley can't stop raving about the insights of the group and their ability to communicate their findings. 😊

Coming up next week: Disco on Thursday

School-gen Minecraft ‘Eco-house’ Competition 2018

Eco-House-design_comp
Use your skills to design and build an eco-house,
and make a video showing how it has:
  • Low environmental impact: How does it fit with the world around it? We want to see a minimal impact on the environment – both in construction and on-going use.
  • Sustainability: We want to see use of sustainable materials in the construction.
  • Energy-efficiency: How energy efficient in the house? Construct is so that it makes best use of renewable energy resources, for heating and lighting, etc.
Overall, you need to create a building that’s friendly to the environment around it – and explain why you think it is.

Looking ahead to Week 9

  • Mrs Dunn is back @ Raroa so see the calendar to the right of this post for classes next week.
  • School finishes at 1.20pm on Wednesday as there is a meeting for staff who belong to the teachers' union (details here)
  • Enrichments are on Thursday afternoon due to Wednesday's early closure
  • No Winter Sport this week
  • Eight students head to Newlands Intermediate on Thursday to represent the school at the Wellington Regional Chess Tournament - all the best!

Find your Tribe...

As part of the NZ Gifted Awareness Week, articles are being shared that parents and students may be interested in.

Tracey Riley outlines the importance of validating who we are and of connecting to like-minds, and how we can enhance self-concept.

'Find your Tribe', by Dr Tracy Riley
"Gifted learners, like all of us, are seeking a tribe, a powerful sense of belonging, that collectively honours and celebrates their individual strengths, differences, quirkiness, interests, abilities and qualities. Even those who may prefer their own company and working independently will ultimately benefit from being connected to like minds."

The Ministry of Education posts upcoming events relevant to GATE students.  Below, are details of two of them.  We are not in a position to recommend these but just wanted to let you know about them in case you are interested.

Forensics@Kristin 2018

About the Programme:
Non-residential camp for Gifted Students Years 7-10
Students spend days in teams solving a dynamic crime with forensics tools and logic. They then swap to a two-day courtroom drama, complete with lawyers as judges. They prosecute their case in a mock trial whilst parents and family friends cheer them on.
With input from the NZ Police ESR Forensics scientists and lawyers, it is the most fun you can legally have with guns, knives, blood and fingerprinting powder!
