Springfire: Teams 3/4

This week, the group discovered the intensities that some gifted people experience.  The positive aspects of these are to be celebrated but they can also create challenges.  We'll be exploring our own next week.

Manawanui & how exercise powers the brain

With cross-country coming up, this video gave us more information
and more inspiration for those not into it...

Never mind the health benefits, this is about how exercise powers up the brain.
Check out the koala info!!!

Philosophy this week

Self-driving cars are already cruising the streets today. And while these cars will ultimately be safer and cleaner than their manual counterparts, they can’t completely avoid accidents altogether (as seen in the news recently).

How should the car be programmed if it encounters an unavoidable accident?
This video inspired this week's philosophical discussion...

Learning Conferences - Thurs 5 April

I see that I am booked out for conferences already.
Please email me if you were unable to secure a time and would like a conference as we will make other arrangements.

Lynne Dunn

Another week came and went...

A busy week of learning opportunities behind us...

Ext(reme) Writers are setting a goal and strategies, with some choosing to enter the NZISSSC (NZ Intermediate School Short Story Competition).
Mathletes in Teams 1, 3-5 continue to fill gaps and explore their next learning steps in Number Knowledge, while Team 2 does the same in Statistics.
Manawanui students looked into the reframing of comments to help keep perspective: e.g. 'I always drop things' to ' this morning, my cup dropped to the floor".
Roxy Film Teams are well underway with filming their entries into the Roxy5 Competition - the editing process starts now!
Philosophy found us looking at the reasonableness of reasons from others' points of views.

This week's timetable is to the right...taking us to Easter!

Springfire for Team 3/4 students

The first session of Springfire was underway today...this is a 5-week block course taking a look into what is giftedness? talent? the delights? the challenges? the strategies to make the most of the delights and lessen the impact of the challenges?

Today, we determined what were facts and what were myths about giftedness.

Philosophy today

The students would like to report that we discussed the associated reasonableness of cows 'farting' as a reason for not eating meat...

Believe it or not - that was a discussion today!

The wider discussions revolved around ordering reasons according to how reasonable they were...and what is the definition of a good reason.  Interesting and complex chat!

Manawanui Update

The group focused some discussions on feelings: the acknowledgment and expression of them.  As part of that, we unpacked Lynne Namka's 'Five Rules about Feelings' and shared our views on them.

Girls Engineering this week

This week was the Relief Shelter workshop to help the students to identify the main issues with current relief shelters and explore the advantages and disadvantages of reciprocal frames.
Models of shelters were made to demonstarte the strength of the design.

Thanks to our 2 wonderful structural engineers from Beca, Victoria and Sarah!

Philosophy today

Today's discussions....

FROM:
Is the hole in the donut part of the donut?

TO:
What makes someone a good person - making others happy or following the rules?

TO:
Are you the same you you were when you were two?

The first part of this video (What Makes Me Me?) provided inspiration for a lot of discussion and the creation of analogies.
